Bears Varsity Baseball Beats Centennial 3-0 in Region Opener, Tuesday, March 3rd
Rain in the metro Atlanta area has been unusually pervasive in 2020, making it difficult to get games in.  In order to avoid scheduling issues later in the season, Cambridge and Centennial agreed to move their two games this week to kick off 7-6A region play to the Lakepoint Sports Complex.  The first pitch was thrown around 8:45 by Casey Young as Cambridge served as the home team.

Young was looking to secure his third win of the season for the Bears.  He worked around a pop-up single just past first in the opening inning, closing out with a couple of strikeouts.  The Bears offense struck first in the bottom of the inning.

Ryan Todd reached by error and moved to second on a sac bunt by Jared SpearsCody Rech stepped to the plate and launched a rocket double to left to plate Todd and make the score 1-0.  Rech has been on fire the past week and continued that way in this game.

Young found trouble of his own in the second.   A leadoff single followed by a double put two runners into scoring position.  Young then coaxed a weak popout to first and closed out the rally with two more K's.  Cambridge went in order before Centennial mounted its biggest threat in the third.

An infield single, a flare over second and a walk loaded the bases with one out in the third for the Knights.  But Young once again doused the rally with two more strikeouts to end the inning.  Cambridge added insurance runs in the bottom of the third.

Alex Moulter led off with a single before being forced out on a fielder's choice by Ryan Todd.  Todd stole second and moved to third on a throwing error before Spears walked to put runners on the corners.  Rech stepped to the plate and once again delivered with a single to left, plating Todd.  Jackson Woods then beat out an infield single and a wild throw from the shortstop allowed a hustling Spears to score and make the score 3-0.

Young tossed scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth to end his day.  Zach Harris entered the mound in the sixth and proceeded to retire six batters in a row to close out the Cambridge 3-0 victory.

Young got the win for Cambridge, going five scoreless innings and scattering seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.  Harris struck out two in his two perfect innings.  Rech once again led the offense.  He went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI.  Woods had a couple of infield hits, while Todd scored twice from his leadoff spot.

Cambridge continues region play on Thursday, March 5th with a game against Centennial at the Lakepoint Sports Complex.  Game time is 8:30 PM.

Go Bears!
