Bears Varsity Baseball Downs West Forsyth 5-2, Thursday, February 27th
Strong pitching and timely hitting were the stories of the day as Cambridge once again found the winning way with a scrappy 5-2 road win over the Wolverines of West Forsyth, Thursday, February 27th.  Casey Young and Matt Faby provided the pitching and Cody Rech provided much of the offense in the victory, Cambridge's fifth of the season.

Young took the mound to start for the visitors and was a bulldog throughout this game.  The Bears offense first spotted him a run in the opening inning courtesy of an infield single by Jared Spears and an RBI double by hot-hitting Cody Rech.  Young then set the side down in order in the bottom of the inning.  Cambridge wasted an Alex Moelter single in the second before the Wolverines mounted a little two out rally in the bottom of the inning.

A double and an infield single placed men on the corners for the home team with two outs.  But Young coaxed a ground ball to second and an inning ending force out.  Young would face even more adversity in the third, still up a run.  The first four West Forsyth batters reached base on an error, a single, an error and another error.  That tied the score and the home team had the bases loaded with no outs.  Young buckled down and struck out the next two hitters, before getting another K on a 3-2 curveball to end the threat and keep the score deadlocked at one each.

Cambridge did not threaten in their half of the fourth and Young finished his day with two more strikeouts in a scoreless bottom of the inning.  Cambridge re-took the lead in the fifth.  Ryan Todd led off with a single to right center and moved to second on a Spears sac bunt.  Rech then stepped to the plate and delivered again with a single to right, driving in Todd for a 2-1 lead.

Faby moved from first to the mound in the fifth and worked around a little trouble to keep the score at 2-1.  Cambridge added to its lead in the sixth without the benefit of a hit.  Walks to Moelter and Todd plus a HBP for Johnny Eneberg loaded the bases.  Walks for Spears and Rech then drove in two and pushed the lead to 4-1.

Another Bears error contributed to another Wolverines run in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap to 4-2.  Cambridge got that run back in the seventh, however.  Singles by Justin Hozman and Moelter kicked things off before Drew Hill lofted a sac fly to left to drive in Hozman.  Faby then got two strikeouts in a perfect seventh to close out the 5-2 Bears victory.

Young picked up the win, his second of the season.  He went four strong innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.  Faby earned his first career save with three innings of two hit baseball, allowing no earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks.  Rech was the offensive star of the game, going 3 for 3 with a double and three RBI.  Moelter had two hits and a run scored.

Cambridge continues non-region play with its first home game of the season on Friday, February 28th versus Milton.  Game time is 5:55 PM.
