The Cambridge varsity baseball squad returned to action with a non-region game at North Springs HS on Friday, April 6th. Despite the nine day layoff the team showed little rust in the dominating 9-3 victory.
Neither team got anything going in the first. Justin Tanguay changed things in the second with a leadoff home run into the trees in right, the second game in a row with a home run for the senior outfielder. Still in the second, Connor Morris lined a two-out single to left and then came home on a double to left center by Chase Durham, making the score 2-0.
Cambridge starter Michael Polk worked another scoreless second inning to end his day. Blake Renner replaced Polk in the third and allowed an unearned run to make it a one-run game. The Cambridge offense didn't waste any time getting that run back, exploding for five runs in the fourth.
Teddy Egan drove in two on a single to right and Cody Rech doubled in another run. Bases loaded walks to Andrew Spears and Ross Friedrick made the score 7-1 in favor of the visitors to cap off the inning.
Cambridge added another run in the fifth courtesy of another Egan single. North Springs countered with a couple of unearned runs in the sixth and the Bears added a final run in the seventh on a Mitch Fleming single pushing the final score to 9-3.
Polk started and got the win, going two scoreless innings. Renner, Aiden Schuster, Jared Spears and Ryan Todd were all solid in relief, allowing no earned runs in five combined innings. The Cambridge offense had eleven hits, led by Egan with two hits and three RBI and Durham with two hits and a couple of runs scored. Tanguay had the home run, while Rech, Durham and Turner Rosenbaum all had doubles.
Cambridge plays one final non-region game before closing out region play on Saturday, April 7th versus King's Ridge at Legion Field. Game time is 1 PM.
Go Bears!
