Bears Varsity Baseball Loses 6-2 to Norcross at Coolray Field, Saturday, March 17th

After playing three consecutive region contests in as many days due to weather, the Cambridge varsity baseball squad ventured out for a non-region tilt against Norcross at Coolray Field, home of the Gwinnett Stripers minor league club.  The cool setting did not inspire great results as Cambridge fell behind early and lost 6-2.

Norcross got off to an early lead in the first off of starter Andrew Spears courtesy of two hit by pitches and two hits to take a 3-0 lead.  Two more hits in the second pushed the score to 4-0.

Junior Mitch Fleming led off the bottom of the second by depositing a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left for the team's first home run of the season.  Down 4-1, Cambridge threatened again in the fourth courtesy of singles by Cody Rech and Justin Tanguay.  But the rally ended there.

Norcross added a run in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead and Cambridge got nothing going in the bottom of the inning.  The Blue Devils added another run in the seventh to take a five run lead.  The Cambridge offense did not go quietly in the bottom of the seventh, however.  Walks by Jared Spears and Chris DeFelice preceded a single by Fleming to make the score 6-2.  Another single by Tanguay loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate, but the Bears could not push anything across and the game ended in a 6-2 defeat.

Spears took the loss for Cambridge.  Ryan Todd made his mound debut and threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.  Fleming led the offense with the solo home run and the RBI single.  Rech and Tanguay each had two hits.

Cambridge returns to region play on Wednesday, March 21st with an away game at Dunwoody.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
