Cambridge Baseball Kicks Off Region Play with 2-0 Victory over Centennial, Wednesday, March 7th

After completing a difficult non-region schedule over the weekend, the Cambridge varsity baseball team opened up region play with a home game against Centennial HS Wednesday night, March 7th.  The Bears got outstanding pitching, timely hitting and solid defense in the 2-0 victory.

Blake Renner was once again sharp on the mound for the home team.  He ran into some trouble in the first, surrendering a couple of singles, but managed to escapte damage when Ross Friedrick threw out the runner stealing second to end the frame.  Renner cruised from that point forward.

The Cambridge offense got out of the gates slowly.  Neither team scored through two and Renner had a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third. Cambridge got busy in the bottom of the inning, however.  Chase Durham walked to lead off the inning and Jared Spears followed with a line drive single to left.  Connor Morris moved them both over with a sacrifice bunt.  Ryan Todd lofted a fly ball to right that was dropped, scoring Durham.  Teddy Egan then drove in Spears on an infield single, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Bears.

Neither offense threatened through six and the score remained 2-0.  Evan Pollifrone entered the game in the seventh for Renner and promptly struck out the first two batters.  An error and a walk put the tying runs on base, but Pollifrone ended the threat with his third strikeout of the inning, securing the 2-0 victory.

Renner went six shutout innings, allowing three hits with seven strikeouts and a walk to gain the win. Pollifrone earned his first career save. Todd, Egan, Cody Rech and Spears each had a hit, while Todd and Egan each had an RBI.

Cambridge continues region play with another home game on Friday, March 9th, this time against Johns Creek.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
