Cross-town rivals Cambridge and Milton squared off for two games on a beautiful Saturday at Milton HS.  The Cambridge bats came alive in game one to win by a 10-7 score, but the offense faded in game two resulting in a 5-0 loss.

Game 1:

Michael Polk took the mound in game one and Milton drew first blood in the bottom of the first scoring two.  They added another run in the fourth to make the score 3-0 in favor of the home team.  The Cambridge bats, however, came to life in the fifth with the aid of three walks by the Milton pitching staff.

Ryan Todd got things started with a one-out double to right.  Teddy Egan singled to right to drive in the first run of the game for Cambridge and moved to second on the throw.  Jared Spears ran for Egan and scored on a Cody Rech single and an error by the center fielder.  Walks by Mitch Fleming and Andrew Spears loaded the bases before Chase Durham tied the game on an infield single.  A Connor Morris hit by pitch and a Christian Lail walk pushed the score to 5-3, before Durham scored on a wild pitch to end the scoring and a 6-3 lead for the visitors.

Milton tacked on a run courtesy of three singles for a 6-4 margin in the bottom of the fifth.  The hot hitting continued for the Bears in the sixth with a leadoff double for Egan and a single for Rech setting up a long double to right center for Ross Friedrick and an 8-4 lead.  Durham drove in another run later in the inning and the score stood at 9-4.

Cambridge added another run in the seventh courtesy of a double to deep center by Todd and an infield single by Rech.  Milton was not about to go quietly as they scored three times in the bottom of the seventh before Kenny Rosenbloom entered the game with two outs to coax the Milton leadoff hitter to ground out to first.

Polk went five innings to earn the victory.  He allowed two earned runs and struck out five with no walks.  Rosenbloom recorded the final out to earn his first save.  The Bears amassed 12 total hits in the game, led by Rech & Todd with three each, while Durham and Egan each had a pair of hits.  Todd had two doubles, while Egan and Friedrick had one each.

Game 2:

Milton received stellar pitching in game two, holding the visitors to four hits on the game.  Casey Young got the start on the mound for Cambridge and neither team could generate any offense in the early going.

Milton opened the scoring in the third courtesy of two doubles and a sacrifice fly, going up 2-0.  Young averted more damage with a pickoff at second.  Milton added another run in the fourth courtesy of a walk and a pair of singles.

Turner Rosenbaum entered the game for Cambridge in the fifth inning.  Milton tacked on two more runs courtesy of a walk, three singles and an error, making the score 5-0 after five.  Neither team could get anything going after that.  Chris DiFelice entered the game in the sixth and tossed a scoreless inning for Cambridge.  Meanwhile, the Bears offense only threatened in the third inning and went quietly the remainder of the game.

Young went four innings allowing three runs with three strikeouts to take the loss.  Todd led the offense with two hits.

Cambridge begins region play with a home game against Centennial on Wednesday, March 7th.  Game time is 5:55 PM.
