Renner Tosses Complete Game in Cambridge 4-1 Victory over Lassiter, Monday, February 26th

Blake Renner put together a very efficient performance as he held the Lassiter bats at bay for a 4-1 complete game victory at Lassiter HS Monday night, Feb. 26th.  Solid defense and timely hitting proved just the right complement to Renner's gutty outing.

It looked like the visiting Bears might notch a score in the first.  Leadoff hitter Ryan Todd singled sharply to left on the game's first pitch.  He moved to second on a Teddy Egan sacrifice bunt before walks to Cody Rech and Ross Friedrick loaded the bases.  The home team escaped damage on a groundout to end the inning, however.  Renner faced a little adversity of his own in the bottom of the first after allowing a leadoff double, but two strikeouts and a groundout ended that threat.

Cambridge scratched out the first run of the game in the third.  Egan was hit by pitch to lead off the inning.  Pinch runner Connor Morris stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on an infield single by Mitch Fleming.  Lassiter tied the game in the fourth courtesy of two singles, but further damage was averted via a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Cambridge moved back in front in the fifth.  Todd singled to lead off the inning before Egan bunted for a hit of his own.  A Fleming walk loaded the bases.  Friedrick drove in the go ahead run on a sac fly to center before Andrew Spears drove an 0-2 pitch deep to the wall in left for a 2-run double and a 4-1 lead.

Sensing a victory within his grasp, Renner cruised through the final three innings with relative ease, securing his first win of the season and the second for the Bears.

Renner allowed six hits and one run in his complete game performance, striking out four.  Spears had the big hit of the evening with his clutch 2-run double.  Todd had two hits and scored a run.

Cambridge comes right back with a non-region game at home with nationally-ranked River Ridge on Tuesday, February 27th.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
