Cambridge Baseball Loses Tough Game to West Forysth 4-3, Friday, February 23rd

Cambridge welcomed the West Forsyth Wolverines for a Friday night home game and the evenly-matched performance went down to the last play of the game before the visitors emerged victorious.  The Bears led for most of the game, but could not close things out in the final innings.

Michael Polk got the start on the mound and pitched well.  He stranded runners each of the first two innings before pitching a perfect third.  The Cambridge offense was silent until the bottom of the third when the action picked up.  Singles by Chase Durham and Connor Morris got the inning started.  Christian Lail then walked to load the bases.  An error on a Ryan Todd ground ball gave the home team the first lead of the game.

Teddy Egan grounded out to make the score 2-0.  Lail would later score on a wild pitch, pushing the score to 3-0.  Polk stranded two in the fourth before surrendering a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

Down 3-1, the visitors stormed back in the sixth courtesy of a pair of walks and a 3-run home run.  Cambridge got nothing going in the bottom of the sixth, but threatened in the bottom of the seventh.  Blake Renner led off with a line drive single to center.  Pinch-hitter Mitch Fleming moved Jared Spears, running for Renner, over to second on a ground out.  With two outs, Justin Tanguay entered the game as a pinch-hitter and delivered with a single to center.  The West Forsyth center fielder made a strong throw, narrowly beating the sliding Spears for the final out of the game and the 4-3 victory for the visiting team.

Polk went five strong, allowing a single run on four hits with five strikeouts.  Andrew Spears took the loss.  Renner led the offense with a pair of singles.  Durham, Morris and Tanguay had the other three hits.

The Bears continue non-region play with a game at Lassiter on Monday, February 26th.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
