Bears Varsity Baseball Takes First Victory of Season with 7-4 Win over Pinecrest

In a game originally scheduled to be played at home, Cambridge defeated Pinecrest Academy on the road by a 7-4 score on Thursday, Feb. 22nd.  Wet conditions forced the move as well as an earlier 4 PM start time due to a lack of lights at Pinecrest.  The change certainly didn't phase the young Bears as both the offense and defense played well in the victory.

Evan Pollifrone got the start on the mound for Cambridge.  The offense spotted him a run in the first.  Ryan Todd led off the game with an infield single and eventually came home on a line drive single off the bat of Ross Friedrick.  Pollifrone got in a little trouble in the bottom of the inning but stranded two courtesy of a couple of strikeouts and a fly out to close out the inning.

Cambridge loaded the bases in the second but could not score.  Pollifrone again dodged trouble with a strikeout to end the bottom of the second.  Mitch Fleming led off the third and got on by error.  A wild pitch moved him over before Friedrick drove him in with a single to left.

Pinecrest scored two in the bottom of the third to tie up the game at 2-2.  But the Cambridge offense made sure that didn't last long.  A Christian Lail walk got things started in the fourth.  A stolen base and a wild pitch moved him to third where he scored on a Todd sacrifice fly.  Walks by Teddy Egan, Cody Rech and Fleming loaded the bases.  Firedrick drove in his third run of the game on a pop fly single to left and an additional run scored on a HBP for Chase Durham, making the score 5-2.

Pinecrest scored a run in the fifth off of reliever Chris DiFelice, moving the score to 5-3.  As the light began to fade, the Cambridge offense wasn't quite done in the sixth.  Cody Rech lined a single to left and came around to score on an error.  Friedrick later scored on a ground out by Blake Renner to push the score to 7-3.  Pinecrest added a run in the sixth, but that was it and Cambridge closed out its first victory for Head Coach Evan Tieles by a score of 7-4.

Pollifrone went three innings to gain his first career win, allowing two runs while striking out five.  Turner Rosenbaum pitched the seventh, striking out three to claim his first career save.  Friedrick was the hitting star, driving in three on three hits, while Durham also had a pair of singles.

Next up, the Bears host West Forsyth on Friday, Feb. 23rd and travel to Lassiter Monday, Feb. 26th.

Go Bears!
