Cambridge Baseball Loses Non-Region Game to Walton, Friday, April 7th

The Cambridge varsity baseball squad showed signs of rust in a non-region game at the tail end of spring break, losing 7-1 Friday night, April 7th at Walton.  Bears pitchers only allowed three Walton hits, but combined to walk eleven on the evening.

The game effectively ended in the first as Cambridge pitchers walked eight Walton batters to push five runs across without the benefit of a Walton hit.  Senior righty Brice Shafer entered the game in the second and stabilized things for the visitors with three shutout innings to keep the Bears in the game.  Walton added two more in the fifth courtesy of three walks and a hit to push their lead to 7-0 before Jake Swiacki entered the game and stopped the rally with a strikeout.

Meanwhile, the Cambridge offense was not able to get anything going against the Walton pitching staff.  Mitch Fleming got the first Cambridge hit on an infield single in the second.  Connor Morris, who laid out for a ball in center in the bottom of the second to turn a slick double play, garnered his first varsity hit on a line drive to center in the third.  Teddy Egan singled sharply to center in the fifth.  Cambridge was finally able to push a run across in the sixth.  Cameron Moore doubled down the left field line to lead off the frame and moved to third on an infield hit by Bradley Wiedman.  Christian Lail grounded out to second to drive in the lone Cambridge run and the game ended 7-1 in favor of the home team.

Michael Polk started on the mound and took the loss.  Shafer pitched three solid innings allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts.  Swiacki went 1 1/3 shutout innings with three strikeouts.  Offensively, five Bears had hits.  Wiedman, Fleming, Egan and Morris had singles and Moore had the lone extra base hit in the game.

Cambridge picks back up with a region game at Dunwoody on Monday, April 10th.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
