Facing a pivotal matchup in the final game of the opening half of region play on Friday, March 24th, Cambridge got great pitching, timely hitting and great defense to even their region record at 4-4. Jon Hirschland was in control throughout, limiting the home team to three singles, while the Bears offense erupted for ten hits in the victory. The victory was the second consecutive shutout for Cambridge.
Cambridge got hot in the first, loading the bases via singles by Conner Young and Bradley Wiedman, and a hit by pitch for Sam Waylock. However, the rally ended there. Hirschland was cruising early as the offense got on the scoreboard in the third. Michael Kolesar led off the inning with a hit by pitch, then moved to third on a well executed hit and run. Young singled sharply through the hole at second to move the stealing Kolesar over. Wiedman knocked in the first run via an infield single to the hole at second. The rally ended there with a 1-0 lead.
A one out single in the fourth by Teddy Egan set the stage again for the visitors. An infield single by Andrew Spears and an error on the play moved the runner to third where he was driven in by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kolesar. Up two, Cambridge added two more in the fifth. Young led off with a double down the left field line. Wiedman singled to center to put runners on the corners. A Waylock groundout scored Young and a Blake Renner line drive single to center scored Wiedman to make the score 4-0.
North Atlanta got a leadoff single in the seventh, but Hirschland buckled down to finish out the complete game victory.
Hirschland got the win, going the distance allowing three hits and striking out six. Wiedman and Young led the offense with three hits a piece. Wiedman had an RBI and a run scored, while Young had a double and a run scored. Waylock, Renner, Egan and Spears had the other hits for the Bears.
Cambridge begins the second half of region play with a home game against Northview on Monday, March 27th. Game time is 5:55 PM.
