Cambridge Baseball Fights Back but Loses Late to Dunwoody, Thursday, March 16th

After crawling back to cut the deficit to a single run, Cambridge allowed a four-run sixth and two more in the seventh to suffer a 10-3 region loss to the Dunwoody Wildcats Thursday night, March 16th at Cambridge HS.

Jon Hirschland took the mound for the Bears.  He escaped trouble in the first via a strikeout to end the frame.  Cambridge could get nothing going in the bottom of the inning.  Dunwoody drew first blood in the second via a walk and and RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.  The Bears would tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Bradley Wiedman launched a shot to left field that hit somewhere at the top of the fence and landed back in play.  The original call was a home run, but after about 10 minutes of discussion, he was awarded a triple.  Jake Swiacki made sure that decision didn't matter by driving a sacrifice fly to right to score Wiedman and tie the game at 1-1.

Three singles, two walks and a hit by pitch put Dunwoody back on top 4-1 in the third.  Hirschland avoided further damage with a key strikeout to end the rally. Neither team could get anything going in the fourth.  A Sam Waylock throw from right gunned an advancing runner at third base, keeping the Wildcats off the board in the top of the fifth.  The Bears rallied in the bottom of the inning.  Andrew Spears led off with an infield single.  Luke Foote then got hit by a pitch and Michael Kolesar walked to load the bases.  Conner Young stepped to the plate and lined a two-out single to right center to drive in two runs to make the score 4-3.  A Waylock walk once again loaded the bases, but the Bears could not push the tying run across.

A couple of key errors contributed to a four-run sixth inning for the visitors, effectively putting the game out of reach as Dunwoody went on to win the game 10-3.

Hirschland took the loss, going 5 2/3 innings allowing four earned runs with four strikeouts.  Bradley Wiedman led the offense with two hits, including the bomb triple, and scored a run.  Andrew Spears got two hits in his first varsity start and scored a run.  Conner Young had the other hit with a pair of RBI.

Cambridge plays another region home game Friday, March 17th versus Centennial.  Game time is 5:55 PM.  They then play a non-region DH on the road against Lanier HS.  Game times are Noon and 3 PM on Saturday, March 18th.

Go Bears!
