Bears Varsity Baseball Loses Late to Pope, Friday, March 10th

Cambridge traveled to Marietta for a region game against the Greyhounds of Pope HS on Friday, March 10th.  After playing a back and forth game, the home team pulled away with a big sixth inning for a 10-2 victory.

Blake Renner took the mound for the Bears and pitched admirably.  He worked out of a first inning jam with a strikeout.  The Cambridge offense sputtered out of the gate producing no hits through the first three innings.  Pope struck first in the bottom of the third.  Three singles and a walk produced a couple of runs and a 2-0 lead for the home team.

The Cambridge offense sparked to life in the fourth.  Sam Waylock singled to lead off the frame, but was quickly erased on a stolen base attempt.  A Conner Young walk and a Jake Swiacki single moved a runner into scoring position.  Cameron Moore came through with a clutch line drive single to right center to knock in Young to make the score 2-1.  But with one out and two runs in scoring position, the Bears could not push the tying run across.

Pope added a run in the bottom of the fourth as Michael Polk entered the game in relief of Renner.  Cambridge struck back in the fifth to close the gap to a run.  A Luke Foote hit by pitch and a Michael Kolesar single pushed a runner into scoring position, and Young singled to center to drive in the run to make the score 3-2.

Bradley Wiedman doubled to the wall in center in the sixth but was left stranded.  The sixth inning ended up going the wrong way for the visitors as three hits, three walks and three hit by pitches contributed to a seven run inning and the victory for the Greyhounds.

Renner took the loss for the Bears, allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.  Young led the offense with a hit, an RBI and a run scored.  Wiedman had the lone extra base hit with a double and Kolesar, Waylock, Swiacki, Moore and freshman Cody Rech had singles, the latter being the first varsity hit for the freshman.

Cambridge continues region play with a home game Monday, March 13th against Dunwoody.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
