Weiermiller K's 14 to Lead Cambridge to 4-0 Victory over Milton, Friday, March 3rd

The Cambridge & Milton HS communities have waited five years for a baseball game to be played between the two schools.  It finally happened on a blustery Friday night, March 3rd, at Milton's baseball field.  A huge crowd turned out on both sides to watch the game, and they were treated to an electric performance by Cambridge senior lefty Austin Weiermiller.  He came out firing from the get-go, and Cambridge generated just enough offense to secure the victory in the inaugural game between the neighboring schools.

Walks by Michael Kolesar and Conner Young got things started in the first.  An error by Milton allowed Kolesar to score and give the visitors the early lead at 1-0.  That would be all  Weiermiller would need as he mowed down the Milton lineup.  After an uneventful first, he struck out the side in the second.  A Michael Kolesar double in the third went for naught.  Weiermiller struck out two more in the bottom of the third, before striking out the side again in the fourth.

A single and a walk by Milton in the fifth broke up the perfect game, but Weiermiller worked out of the jam with another strikeout.  Walks by Young and Hayden Onorato in the sixth led to a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Bradley Wiedman.  Senior Jake Swiacki lofted a fly ball to right to score Young and push the lead to 2-0.  Weiermiller closed out his evening by striking out the side yet again in the bottom of the inning.  The Bears offense was not done, pushing across two more in the top of the seventh.  A single by Kolesar and an error by Milton scored Crew Cohoes, who had been hit by a pitch.  Young then singled up the middle to score Kolesar and make the score 4-0.  Young entered the game on the mound in the seventh and closed out the victory with the 15th strikeout of the evening.

Weiermiller earned the win with his six inning, one hit, fourteen strikeout gem.  Kolesar led the offense with two hits and a pair of runs scored, with a double.  Young got a hit, a run scored, an RBI and three walks.  Blake Renner had the other hit for the Cambridge offense.

Cambridge and Milton play a final game Saturday afternoon, March 4th at 2 PM at Cambridge.  Cambridge begins region play with a game at Northview on Monday, March 6th.

Go Bears!
