Bears Lose Tough Extra Inning Game to Blessed Trinity 2-1, Thursday, February 16th

In a battle of really good teams with many personal connections among the players involved on each side, the Blessed Trinity Titans scraped out a 2-1 victory in 8 innings over the visiting Cambridge Bears Thursday, February 16th.  Pitching was the name of the game throughout as both sides saw outstanding performances on the mound.

Austin Weiermiller got the start for Cambridge and pitched flawlessly in five innings of work.  Neither team could get much going, though the Bears did strand a runner in scoring position in the third.  The Bears would scratch out a run in the fifth on a Sam Waylock double to right center that scored Christian Lail who had walked.  A Conner Young single, however, was the end of that rally.  Two strikeouts by Weiermiller and a pick-off at 3B by catcher Teddy Egan ended a BT rally in the bottom of the fifth.

Blessed Trinity scored the tying run in the sixth on a walk and fielder's choice, but new pitcher Blake Renner escaped further damage.  Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the seventh, and the Bears wasted a Mitch Fleming single in the top of the 8th.  Renner struck out the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the 8th, but a pair of singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases.  A 1-1 pitch got by the catcher, allowing the winning run to score for the home team.

The Bears drop to 1-1 on the young season.  Weiermiller went five innings, allowing one hit and no runs, striking out eight and walking a pair.  Renner suffered the loss, allowing a pair of unearned runs.  Sam Waylock continued his hot start to the season, bagging a single and a double and the lone Cambridge RBI.

Cambridge returns home to play Woodstock on Monday, February 20th.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
