Bears Varsity Baseball Wins Season Opener Against 2nd Ranked Norcross, Wed., February 15th

The Cambridge and Norcross baseball squads battled the cold and wind in a game dominated by 21 walks by the two teams.  On the flip side, the teams struck out a combined 26 batters, allowing only 3 hits.  But one of those hits ended up being the difference for the home team.

Hayden Onorato got the start for the Bears.  He blew through the first two innings with little trouble, allowing only one runner with 3 K's.  The offense sputtered out of the gate, getting a runner in scoring position each of the first two innings without pushing anything across.  Onorato got into trouble in the third but got out of a one-out bases loaded jam by striking out the last two batters.

Norcross pushed two runs across in the fourth, courtesy of five walks.  Jon Hirschland entered the game and eventually worked out of the bases loaded jam by striking out the side.  Cambridge scraped out a run in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a bases loaded walk by Cameron Moore.  Down 2-1 going into the bottom of the 6th, the Bears offense finally got a spark.  Sam Waylock led off with an infield single.  A couple of walks loaded the bases with a third walk by pinch-hitter Christian Lail driving in Waylock for the tying run.  Michael Kolesar then came through with a clutch single to left, driving in Conner Young and Moore.  Lail would later score on a wild pitch to push the score to 5-2.

Hirschland worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 7th by striking out the final two hitters to close out the come-from behind victory.

Onorato worked three hitless innings, striking out six and walking six.  Hirschland earned the win with four innings of one-hit shutout ball, striking out eight and walking four.  Kolesar led the offense with his clutch single and two RBI, while Moore walked three times and scored a run.

The Bears take on Blessed Trinity in an away game Thursday night.  Game time is 5:55PM.

Go Bears!
