Cambridge Varsity Baseball Kicks Off Season with 13-3 Exhibition Win over Forsyth Central

Coming off of a record-breaking 2016 season, the 2017 Cambridge baseball squad picked up right where it left off with a 13-3 victory over Forsyth Central in a preseason game at Forsyth Central Friday night, February 10th.  Both teams emptied their benches in preparation for season-opening games next week.  The Bears threw five pitchers on the evening, scattering 3 hits and striking out 11 Forsyth Central batters.  The offense contributed 16 hits and 10 walks on the evening, accounting for the 13 runs.

The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead when, after loading the bases via three walks, sophomore Mitch Fleming lofted a fly ball down the right field line to score Michael Kolesar and Bradley Wiedman.  Cambridge tacked on two more in the second via a Cameron Moore single scoring Conner Young and Luke Foote.  Up 4-1, the Bears added five more runs in the 3rd inning.  Sam Waylock beat out an infield hit scoring Wiedman.  Young doubled to left, plating Fleming and Hayden Onorato.  Teddy Egan then closed out the inning with a single, scoring Waylock and Young to make the score 9-1, effectively putting the game out of reach.  The Bears would eventually tack on four more runs over the final four innings for the 13-3 victory.

Sam Waylock led the offense with 3 hits, while Teddy Egan drove in 3 runs.  Conner Young and Bradley Wiedman each had a double.  Austin Weiermiller, Jon Hirschland, Hayden Onorato, Blake Renner and Conner Young all showed well in their brief appearances on the mound in what could be a good sign for the pitching staff this coming season.

The Bears kick off the regular season with a home game against Norcross on Wednesday, February 15th.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
