Bears Lose Last Regular Season Game 1-0 to Creekview Thurs., April 14th; Playoffs Up Next

The winning streak is over.  After 16 consecutive victories, the Cambridge Bears varsity baseball team tasted defeat for the first time since a March 4th loss to Forsyth Central.  And while the goal is to win every game possible, the timing for this loss probably could not have been better as the Bears open up sub-region playoffs next Wednesday looking to build another long winning streak through the state playoffs.

For the game Thursday night at Creekview, it was a battle of pitching and defense the entire game.  The two teams combined for only four strikeouts, so both defenses needed to rise to the occasion and for the most part they did.  Jon Hirschland got the start for Cambridge, and he pitched a whale of a game.  The Creekview starter was equally as effective.

Both pitchers started off with 1-2-3 innings in the first.  The Bears got a pair of walks in the second from Conner Young and Luke Foote, but a double play ended that rally.  Creekview got a single to lead off the second but that was promptly erased by a beautiful 6-4-3 double play by Brett Hawkins and Cameron Moore.  The Bears got singles from Cameron Moore and Davis Dasher in the third but a caught stealing and a couple of hard hit balls that were fielded by the Grizzlies defense ended that rally.

A 2-out double in the bottom of the third for the home team went for naught as Hirschland coaxed a fly out to center to end the threat.  The Bears threatened again in the fourth when Young ripped a ball into the right center gap that was held up enough by the wind blowing in from right for the center fielder to make the play.  Bradley Wiedman followed next with a single to right that could have otherwise driven in a run but with no runner on it ended up causing no damage as he was left stranded.

Creekview struck for the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.  The leadoff hitter singled to center, setting up the play of the game.  The next hitter lined a clean single to center that got under the glove of the outfielder, allowing the runner to advance all the way home for a 1-0 lead for the home team.  Hirschland retired the next three batters to end the threat and keep the score at 1-0.

Cambridge was not through, however.  A one-out walk for Hayden Onorato got things going in the fifth.  A two-out single by Davis Dasher put the tying run at second, but the Bears could not capitalize from there.  The Creekview defense took over from that point, making several stellar plays on hard hit balls off of Cambridge bats over the next two innings.  The result was an efficient 1-0 victory for the Grizzlies.

Hirschland absorbed the tough-luck loss, his first on the season.  He went the distance, allowing an unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.  Davis Dasher led the offense with a pair of singles in three at bats.  Bradley Wiedman and Cameron Moore had the other hits for the Bears.

The Bears begin sub-region playoff play next Wednesday, April 20th with a home game against River Ridge.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
