Cambridge Sweeps North Springs to Extend Streak to 12 Games with 9-1 Victory, Friday, April 1st

The Cambridge Bears varsity baseball team won its 12th straight game in workmanlike fashion Friday night, April 1st at Cambridge field, beating visiting North Springs by a score of 9-1.  The Bears bats, which were somewhat silent on Wednesday, roared back to life, and another solid pitching performance by Jon Hirschland kept the visiting Spartans at bay.

Unlike recent performances, the Bears did not strike first this game.  North Springs took a 1-0 lead in the second on an error and a pair of hits, but Hirschland escaped any more danger by coaxing a fly ball to right to end the rally.  Cambridge would score a pair of their own in the bottom of the inning.  A HBP for Austin Weiermiller and a single by Brett Hawkins would start the rally.  Both moved over on a wild pitch and would later score on a double from senior Davis Dasher to make the score 2-1.

The Bears would open it up a bit in the fourth.  With one out Brett Hawkins lofted a triple to right center.  He would score on a single off the bat of Cameron Moore.  A Crew Cohoes walk and a double by senior Pete Gottschalk would make the score 4-1.  Conner Young would drive in Cohoes and Gottschalk with a double to right center to make the score 6-1 and open up a little breathing room.

Walks by Sam Waylock and Cameron Moore in the fifth would lead to scores.  Waylock would come around on a single by Dasher and Moore would eventually score on a wild pitch to push the score to 8-1.  Freshman Blake Renner would close out the scoring in his first varsity at bat.  His fly ball to center scored Young for a sacrifice fly and a 9-1 victory.

Jon Hirschland settled down after the second inning to record his 5th win of the season.  He went six innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk.  Brett Hawkins got his first action on the mound this season and closed out the game with a scoreless seventh.

Davis Dasher and Conner Young led the offense.  Dasher had a pair of hits, including a double, with three RBIs.  Young also had a single, double and a pair of RBIs.  Brett Hawkins had a single and a triple with a pair of runs scored.  Cameron Moore scored twice.

The Bears close out region play next week with a series against Sprayberry.  Game one is noon on Monday, April 4th at Cambridge.

Go Bears!
