Mullis Guides Bears Varsity Baseball to 8th Straight Victory with 8-1 Win over Kell, Wednesday, March 23rd

The Cambridge varsity baseball team is on quite a roll and handed region-leading Kell a second straight defeat in a 8-1 victory at home Wednesday evening, March 23rd.  Senior right-hander Jon Mullis led the way with a complete game performance that kept the Kell hitters off balance throughout the entire game.  The Bears offensive attack was just as strong, amassing 10 hits on the evening, including one for each Cambridge starter.

As has been the case in recent games, Cambridge drew first blood.  After a 1-2-3 inning by Mullis in the top of the first frame, the Bears pushed across four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Davis Dasher and Bradley Wiedman reached via a walk and a single, respectively, to kick things off.  A fielder's choice moved the lead runner to third where Dasher would later score on an RBI groundout by Conner Young.  A Hayden Onorato single and a HBP for Luke Foote loaded the bases.  Pete Gottschalk scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0, then sophomore Jacob Cabe came through with a huge 2-RBI double to the left field wall to push the score to 4-0.

That's all the support that Mullis would need as it turns out. The Bears were not done, however. After giving up an unearned run in the 4th, Cambridge would strike for three of its own.  A Dasher single would drive in Brett Hawkins who was hit by a pitch.  Bradley Wiedman drove a double to right center to score Dasher and would later score on a Kell error to make the score 7-1. The Bears scored the final run of the game in the fifth on back to back doubles by Hawkins and Cameron Moore.

Mullis allowed a single unearned run on three hits and a couple of walks. He struck out six.  The balanced Bears offense was led by Bradley Wiedman who had a pair of hits, including a double. Jacob Cabe knocked in two, and Foote, Moore, Hawkins and Dasher each had a double.  Dasher and Hawkins scored twice each.

The Bears finish off the series with Kell on Friday, March 25th with a game at Kell HS.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
