Weiermiller Goes Distance to Lead Bears to 5-1 Win over Kell, Monday, March 21st

Weiermiller Goes Distance to Lead Bears to 5-1 Win over Kell, Monday, March 21st

Austin Weiermiller turned in a masterful performance on the mound to lead the Cambridge varsity baseball squad to a 5-1 win over region-leading Kell Monday night, March 21st at Kell HS.  Not to be forgotten the Cambridge bats were out in force as well, connecting for 12 hits on the day.  The win over Kell is now the 7th consecutive victory for the Bears.

Cambridge drew first blood in the top of the first.  Singles by Davis Dasher and Crew Cohoes got things started.  A Pete Gottschalk sacrifice bunt moved the runners over and Dasher would later score on a wild pitch.  The next three innings saw the Bears offense stall each time after inning-ending double plays by Kell.  A Cameron Moore single in the second was wiped out by a double play as were singles in the third by Cohoes and Conner Young.  Luke Foote singled in the fourth but was similarly erased.  So by that point the Bears were up 1-0 but way up in hits.

Fortunately, Weiermiller was cruising through the Kell lineup with relative ease.  The fifth inning would be different for the visitors.  A Gottschalk bunt single scored Moore who had singled earlier.  Hayden Onorato came through with a clutch single plating Cohoes who had also singled previously, making the score 3-0.  Bradley Wiedman doubled to right center, knocking in Gottschalk.

Up 4-0, the Bears pushed across another run in the 6th.  A Moore single and a Dasher double put runners at second and third.  Moore scored on an error by the Kell shortstop on a ball hit by Cohoes.  The rally ended there, however.  Kell made things interesting in the bottom of the inning.  A leadoff double and a couple of wild pitches got Kell on the board, but that would be all.  Weiermiller withstood a rally in the 7th but struck out the final hitter with the bases loaded to complete the 5-1 victory.

Weiermiller went the distance in earning the win.  He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 11.  Crew Cohoes led the offense, getting 3 hits in his 4 at bats.  Davis Dasher and Cameron Moore had two hits a piece, with Dasher getting a double. Moore scored twice.  Bradley Wiedman also doubled.

The Bears continue their region series on Wednesday, March 23rd with a home game against Kell.  Game time is 5:55 PM.

Go Bears!
