On a beautiful evening, and after a 2-hour delay waiting for umpires to arrive, the Cambridge varsity baseball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a solid 9-1 victory over Riverwood Wednesday, March 9th at Cambridge field. The visitors contributed to the cause by committing 7 errors and walking 9 Cambridge batters in the game.
Three walks and an error in the first drove home two Cambridge runs. A Pete Gottschalk single, a walk by Hayden Onorato and an error on a ball hit by Bradley Wiedman scored 2 in the third. Wiedman would come around to score on a wild pitch to push the score to 5-0. Riverwood scored its lone run in the 5th to make the score 6-1.
Singles by Gottschalk and Onorato and another error on a ball off the bat of Wiedman loaded the bases for Conner Young, who hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive in a run. Onorato would later score on a wild pitch to make the score 8-1. A Davis Dasher HBP and a double off the bat of Gottschalk in the 6th made the score 9-1, which was the final score.
Jon Hirschland pitched a whale of a game, going 6 strong innings and scattering 5 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 1 to earn the victory. Niko Kourtis pitched a perfect 7th to close out the game.
Offensively, Gottschalk led the way with 3 hits and a walk in his four at bats. He scored 3 times and drove in a run. Onorato had the other Bears hit, walked twice and scored 2 runs.
The Bears finish the 3-game series with Riverwood Friday night, March 11th at Old Milton HS. Game time is 5:55 PM.
Go Bears!
